Replacing LCD Screen for Your Resin LCD 3D Printer

by Kingroon 3D on Feb 26, 2022

When it comes to resin 3D printers, we know that both the resin, the vat, as well as the FEP film sheet at the bottom and the lcd screen are considered consumables.

For the FEP film, you have to change it after a few weeks or a few months of using, depending on how often you printing, how large you printing, and how aggressive the peel force is, which can vary from printer to printer, from resin to resin.

Today, we'll have some tutorials of how to changing LCD screens of LCD resin 3D printers. While replacing a defective screen is not as easy as replacing fep sheet. The mono lcd screens usually have a couple of thousand hours of lifespan. So you shouldn't really have to replace it for a really long.

mono lcd screen change

In this article, the monochrome LCD screen replacing tutorial will carry out on an Elegoo Saturn, and it also works for Kingroon KP6, KP6 Plus and other resin 3D printers with a ChiTu motherboard.

Remove Defected LCD Screen

We will need to start off by unclipping the existing lcd screen cable.

1. Make sure that your 3D printer is powered off. Unplug the power cable just to be on the safe side.

2. Remove the screws of the bottom of the printer to gain access to the lcd ribbon cable.

3. Peel off the adhesive which holds the ribbon cable down to the controller board, and then it was able to pull it out of the slot.

4. Once that ribbon cable becomes loose we can go ahead and remove these screws on the top of the printer. The only two screws that you're not going to be removing are the two towards the backcenter which are the ones holding the stepper motor in place.

5. After removing those screws, let's separate the top half from the bottom half of the printer.

6. Now unplug both the z end stop as well as the stepper motor cable from the main board. Remember to wear gloves to avoid touching the led array directly.

If you have any kinds of oils or things like that on your hands, it could burn up the LED array. So just be mindful, if you're not wearing gloves, don't touch that led array.

7. Remove the black tape that is on the top of the printer surrounding the lcd screen.

8. Flip over the top half of the resin printer to gain access to the bottom side of the lcd screen. Push on the bottom side of the lcd screen with two thumbs until it pops up. Place double-sided adhesive strips around the perimeter.

Replace New LCD Screen

Then you can go ahead and grab the new LCD screen. You need to remove the plastic protective film on the screen. Then take the ribbon cable and the top portion through the thin slot in the top of the aluminum and place that new lcd screen on top of the thin adhesive strips. Make sure you do your best to align it before you actually set it on the adhesive. Apply a little bit of pressure to the outside edges just to make sure that the adhesive was really biting onto the lcd screen.

change elegoo lcd screen

Once the lcd screen is in place take the new strips of black tape and surround the perimeter on the top of the lcd screen. The main purpose is seal the seams and to prevent the damage of LCD screen, mainboard, or LED array if there's any kind of a resin leak happens.

Now we can remove the screen protector off the top side of the lcd screen.
Place the top half of your printer back on the bottom half. Plug in that z end stop and stepper motor cables. Insert the new ribbon cable back into that slot and lock down the latch to make sure it's it's biting down on that ribbon cable.

When you turn on the printer and you go under the exposure test you'll see the rectangle displayed. And that means everything is done, and the left to do is to assemble the last couple screws.

It’s actually easier to remove the wrap around side panels than the bottom panel from the KP6. Be careful with the ribbon cable connecting the M20 Chitu Systems Basic motherboard to the LCD screen. If it’s accidentally damaged, you can buy a replacement on Amazon. The cable is marked 50 × 0.5 × 150 which means 50 pin, 0.5 mm pitch, 150 mm length. The width is 25.5 mm (1"). This is a Type A cable meaning the cable contacts are on the same side of the ribbon cable.

There is usually enough adhesive remaining on the LCD screen opening to hold the new screen. If you can’t reuse the black border tape, you can use black electrical tape in a pinch. Be careful not to cover any part of the screen through which the UV light shines.

The red (+) and black (-) wires from the MB_F socket connect to the 40 mm fan in the top deck of the KP6 resin printer. MB_F is an abbreviation for Main Board (Mother Board) Fan. The + and – indicate which wires connect to the applicable side of the socket

While installing new LCD, the red and black wires from terminal marked +MB-F- dislodged. Please advise where these wires are supposed to attach
